Codified by Ohio Revised Code and enforced by the Ohio Administrative Code, new statewide rules pertaining to sewage treatment systems became effective January 1, 2007. The goal of the new rules is to consistently apply regulations statewide rather than on a county by county basis as in the past.
While Ohio Realtors lobbied against these new rules claiming they were too burdensome financially to homeowners, the Ohio Department of Health insists more cost-effective methods may now be allowed that were denied in the past. A grace period until July 2007 was originally passed by Ohio legislators, however, Governor Taft chose to veto this extension stating, "The legacy of poorly operating sewage systems in Ohio is well recognized. Current rules are outdated and do not adequately provide for the appropriate treatment of waste."
